A Brief History
The Nova Scotia Forestry Association was first established at the turn of the century when much of Canada's forests were being destroyed due to careless fires. A gifted orator named Robson Black traveled from coast to coast spreading the message of protection and wise management of Canada's forests. The early days saw a common goal and message of fire prevention. However, as time went on, there became a need for separate organizations to meet the more local priorities of forest education. In 1959, a group of environmentally concerned citizens decided to establish a forestry association in Nova Scotia
The early days of the NSFA saw the formation of a Smokey Bear Reading Club, poster contests, a lecture series, scholarships and the National Forest Week campaign.
The NSFA is involved in planning activities for National Forest Week which is held the third week in September . The objective is to focus attention on our forests. Activities planned during this week include Arbor Day tree planting ceremonies, and the Provincial Poster contest for children.
The NSFA is always looking for new members to join with us in our efforts to provide forestry awareness opportunities for all Nova Scotians. The Association is a registered charitable organization and provides receipts for tax deduction purposes.
